Palmingo Pools Winter Freeze Checklist

Before the Freeze

Confirm freeze protection is enabled

  • In the iAquaLink app, look for “Freeze Protection Mode” near the pump icon.

  • Make sure your system is connected to WiFi and communicating.

Check pump and equipment power

  • Ensure breakers are ON and equipment is running normally.

  • Verify no error messages or communication failures.

Turn off skimmer valves

  • Close the skimmer line so the system pulls warmer water from the main drain.

  • This reduces icy water entering the plumbing.

Set heater to bypass

  • Turn the bypass valve so water does not flow through the heater.

  • Optional: remove heater drain plugs to release any standing water.

Remove debris from the pool

  • Clear leaves or obstructions that could affect skimming and circulation.

During the Freeze

Monitor Freeze Protection Mode

  • Pumps should run automatically at ~2,230 RPM.

  • Active schedules will be overridden—this is normal.

Do NOT run your heater

  • Manufacturers advise against running heaters during freezing weather.

  • Freeze Protection Mode will shut the heater off automatically.

Keep the pool cover managed

  • If snow is present, gently remove it to prevent excess weight.

  • If it’s just a freeze (no storm), keeping the cover on helps retain heat.

  • Your cover should still open—covers do not prevent freezing.

Check for strong water flow

  • Listen for normal pump operation.

  • Confirm returns are pushing water into the pool.

Insulate exposed plumbing (optional extra protection)

  • Use pipe insulation, foam sleeves, or moving blankets + duct tape.

  • Prioritize pipes and unions directly on the equipment pad.

If Power Is Lost (Rolling Blackout or Outage)

Immediately turn off breakers to the equipment

  • Prevent pumps from trying to restart frozen.

Drain equipment
Remove drain plugs from:

  • Pumps

  • Filter

  • Heater

  • Any exposed PVC low points

Open all valves

  • Allow water to move out freely and relieve pressure.

Cover exposed equipment

  • Use blankets, padding, or insulation until power returns.

After the Freeze Breaks

Inspect equipment for cracks or leaks
Reinstall drain plugs (if removed)
Return valves to normal operating positions
Confirm freeze protection mode has ended and schedules have resumed
Check pump priming and system pressure

If anything looks or sounds unusual, contact Palmingo service before restarting your system.

Quick Reference: What NOT to Do

✘ Don’t run the heater during a freeze
✘ Don’t let water sit motionless in pipes
✘ Don’t force the pool cover open if ice has formed on top
✘ Don’t wait until temperatures drop to start checking equipment
✘ Don’t assume freeze protection will run if power is out
